Overview

BUS2GREEN is an ambitious R&D project, aiming at the improvement of the environmental footprint of Public Road Transportation in Greece, Europe and abroad. The overall objective of the project is to design and develop innovative products for the “hybridization” of road-based public transportation in urban areas, contributing to the reduction of fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in urban transports and the promotion of electromobility in Europe.

A complete, validated and parameterized technical solution for the “hybridization” of conventional thermal buses is developed – it consists of renewable energy harvesters, storage units, smart apps and a smart energy management. The core technology is based on the caption of solar radiation using photovoltaic panels on the roof and windows of the buses. The produced electric energy will be used to power a big part of the buses electrical load, increasing their energy autonomy while at the same time contributing to the transition to a cleaner Urban Public Road Transportation Sector in Greece and the EU. The “hybridization” concept is sustainable – it is applied to already operating buses, and so it improves their environmental footprint without the need for mass replacements of the relevant fleet or drastic changes in the production chain. The project is supported by a grant from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants Greece 2014-2021, in the frame of the Programme “Business Innovation Greece”
